Freedom and Democracy Day is a public holiday in Chad, and it is observed on December 1 each year. The holiday commemorates the overthrow of Hissene Habre by Idriss Deby in 1990.
Hissene Habre was born in 1942 in northern Chad and studied in Paris, France. He seized power in 1982 and became the 5th President of Chad. He created a secret police force known as the Documentation and Security Directorate, and used that to torture and execute his opponents. His regime was characterized by the human rights abuses such as arbitrary arrests, systemic torture, and political killings by Human Rights Watch.
On December 1, 1990, Idriss Deby overthrew Hissene Habre in a successful coup with the support of Libya and Sudan. Hissene Habre went into exile in Senegal on December 2, 1990 when the rebels entered N'Djamena, the capital of Chad.
