Independence Day (Gabon)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Gabon, and it is observed on August 16 and 17 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Gabon gained its independence from France on this day in 1960.

Gabon is a country on the west coast of Central Africa. Portuguese navigators first visited the region in the fifth century. France started to establish a protectorate over the coastal regions of Gabon in 1838. European colonists began the Scramble for Africa in the 1880s. France invaded the territory and occupied Gabon in 1885.

Gabon became one of the four territories of the federation of French Equatorial Africa in 1910, which was dissolved in 1958 following the collapse of the French Fourth Republic. On August 17, 1960, Gabon gained its independence from France.
