Emancipation Day (Trinidad and Tobago)

Emancipation Day is a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, on August 1 each year. The holiday commemorates when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into force on August 1, 1834.

Trinidad and Tobago became a British crown colony in 1797 and gained independence in 1962. Following the British, slavery was abolished in Trinidad and Tobago in 1834. However, former slaves were required to serve an apprenticeship period as part of the compensation paid to their owners. On August 1, 1838, the apprenticeship system finally ended, and full emancipation was given to the slaves.

Trinidad and Tobago declared a national holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery on August 1, 1985, and it became the first independent country to celebrate emancipation.
