Day of Our Lady of Almudena (or Virgin of Almudena) is a regional holiday in the autonomous community of Madrid in Spain, and it is observed on November 9 each year.
The Virgin of Almudena is a statue of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, holding the baby Jesus, and it is regarded as the patroness of Madrid, Spain. It is believed that the statue was brought to Spain by Saint James because he started the words about Christianity.
According to the legend, the statue was hidden inside the walls of the town when Moors invaded the country to avoid being destroyed, however, the location was forgotten after generations. About 300 years later, the Christian ruler King Alfonso VI conquered Madrid. He started to look for the statue and asked his soldiers to pray. After days of pray, the spot hiding the statue crumbled and the statue appeared.
