The Region of Murcia is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The territory has long been a human settlement for thousands of years. After Moors' arrival, people began to slowly settle in the area of Murcia, which caused more conflicts between different tribes and groups. To pacify this area, the City of Murcia was established in 825.
In the middle of the 13 century, the Kingdom of Murcia emerged when the Christians conquered the Muslim-held Murcia, and it formed its own institutions until 1833 when the provincial administrative reform took place.
In 1978, the Regional Council of Murcia was created as a pre-autonomous body, and the Statute of Autonomy of the Region of Murcia was approved in 1982.
