Constitution Day is a public holiday in North Korea, observed on December 27 each year. The holiday commemorates the adoption of the Socialist Constitution of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in 1972.
After the establishment of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the first Constitution of North Korea was adopted in 1948, which was modeled after the 1936 Constitution of the Soviet Union.
The 1972 Constitution replaced the 1948 Constitution. The new constitution established a new government system, and the head of state became the President. Kim Il-sung became the President of North Korea from the Premier of North Korea.
The constitution has been amended several times since its adoption in 1972.
