Constitution Day (Armenia)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Armenia, and it is observed on July 5 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the Constitution was adopted on July 5, 1995.

In February 1918, Russian-controlled Eastern Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR). Shortly after, all three nations declared independence, and Armenia declared independence as the First Republic of Armenia on May 28, 1918.

However, independence only lasted a short time. The Red Army invaded Armenia on December 2, 1920, and proclaimed it the Soviet Republic. Seven years after, Armenia regained independence in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the adoption of a new constitution became inevitable for the new country.

On July 5, 1995, the Constitution of Armenia was adopted, followed by a nationwide Armenian referendum.
