Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day commemorates Mustafa Kemal's landing at Samsun on May 19, 1919, regarded as the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence, a war of independence waged by the Turkish National Movement against the Allied powers from May 1919 to July 1923.
Mustafa Kemal is the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, and he served as the first president from 1923 to 1938. He was born in 1881 and died in 1938 at 57.
