Candlemas (Liechtenstein)

Candlemas is a public holiday in the Principality of Liechtenstein, and it is observed on February 2 each year, 40 days after Christmas. The holiday commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem.

Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin or the Meeting of the Lord, is celebrated by many Christian Churches. According to the New Testament, Mary and Joseph took the Infant Jesus to the Temple to complete Mary's ritual purification forty days after the birth of Jesus, and he was called the light of the world to dispel sin and darkness.

Candles were important in those old days, and some people thought candles will protect against illness and darkness, and because of this, candles used for the coming year were blessed at Mass in church on this day.
