Canberra Day is a public holiday in the federal territory of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), and it is observed on the second Monday in March.
Canberra Day is to celebrate the official naming of Canberra by Lady Denman on March 12, 1913. The Canberra area was inhabited by Indigenous people before the European exploration and settlement. The European people started to settle in this area in the 1820s. In the late 19th century, the population in this area kept growing and the area became the national capital.
The government invited suggestions of the city name in 1912 and many names were suggested by the public. On March 12, 1913, Lady Denman announced the city's name will be "Canberra". Lady Denman was the wife of the fifth Governor-General of Australia who was also active in women's rights.
