Botswana Day

Botswana Day, also Independence Day, is a public holiday in Botswana, and it is observed on September 30 each year.

Botswana Day commemorates the anniversary of when Botswana gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966.

Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It became one British colony in 1885 with the name of the Bechuanaland Protectorate. The Bechuanaland Protectorate, Basutoland (now Lesotho), and Swaziland (now Eswatini) were not included in the Union of South Africa when it was formed in 1910 from the main British colonies in the region. Although provision was made after, this was never occurring. The possibility of incorporating these territories into South Africa also ended after South Africa's withdrawal from the Commonwealth in 1961.

The United Kingdom accepted proposals for democratic self-government in Botswana in 1964, and it gained independence on September 30, 1966. Sir Seretse Khama became the first President of Botswana.
