Black Awareness Day (Brazil)

Black Awareness Day, also called Zumbi Day, is a regional holiday in Brazil, and it is observed on November 20 each year.

Black Awareness Day is one of the important holidays for the black community in Brazil, and it is a day to honor Zumbi dos Palmares as a hero and freedom fighter and to celebrate a regained awareness by the black community about their great contribution to the country.

Zumbi dos Palmares was born free in Palmares in 1655. He was captured by the Portuguese and became a slave at the age of 6. In 1670, he escaped from the plantation and returned to his birthplace. He showed his military talent in his early 20s and became the commander of the Palmares kingdom in 1675.

In 1678, he became the new king of Palmares and fought for the Palmares' independence, which increased the tensions with the Portuguese. In 1694, the Portuguese colonists launched an assault on the Palmares and destroyed the kingdom's central settlement.

Betrayed by one of his friends,  Zumbi was captured and beheaded by the Portuguese on November 20, 1695.
