Awal Ramadan, also known as the Start of Ramadan, is a public holiday in the state of Johor, Malaysia, Brunei, Afghanistan, and many other Muslim countries, and it is observed on the first day of the Ramadan month, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
Ramadan is a month of fasting, and Muslims will fast for the whole month of Ramadan, and Awal Ramadan is the first day starting the fasting. The fasting is only during daylight, starting right before dawn and ending at sunset.
All healthy adult Muslims must fast during the holy month of Ramadan; however, children, seniors, or pregnant women who are physically or mentally incapable are exempt.
During fasting daylight, people are not allowed to have food or drink, so it is recommended to have a meal before dawn.
