Ashura, also known as Yawm Ashura, or Tamkharit in Senegal, is the tenth day of Muharram, which is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The first day of Muharram month marks the beginning of a new Islamic year.
Ashura means "tenth" in Semitic languages, and it marks the day that Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by God creating a path in the Sea.
For Shi'a Muslims, Ashura is a solemn day of mourning the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, who is the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and died in theĀ Battle of Karbala.
The Battle of Karbala was a military engagement in Karbala, in present Iraq, between Muhammad's grandson, Husayn, and a larger military force of Yazid I. The battle is marked as the event that separated Sunni and Shi'a Islam, and it is particularly central to Shi'a Muslim belief.
