Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day

Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day is a public holiday in Armenia, and it is observed on April 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the victims of the Armenian genocide of 1915.

Before World War I, Armenia was in two parts: Eastern Armenia and Western Armenia. Western Armenia was under Ottoman rule, while Eastern Armenia was under Russian rule. The outbreak of World War I led to the confrontation between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire.

During World War I, many Armenian volunteers joined the Imperial Russian Army, which made the Ottoman Empire look at the Armenians with distrust and suspicion, and passed the Tehcir Law, a law authorizing the deportation of the Ottoman Empire's Armenian population.

On April 24, 1915, the Ottoman authorities arrested Armenian intellectuals, which was considered the start of the Armenian genocide. The genocide was implemented in two phases: the brutal massacres of the male Armenian population and the deportation of Armenian women, children, and the elderly into the Syrian Desert without food and water. It was widely estimated that about 1.5 million Armenians were killed.

The Armenian Genocide Memorial complex was built in 1967 dedicated to the victims of the Armenian genocide. During the holiday, hundreds of thousands of people gather at the memorial with fresh flowers to commemorate the victims of the genocide.
