Anniversary of Victory over ISIS

The Anniversary of Victory over ISIS is a public holiday in Iraq, and it is observed on December 10 each year.

The Anniversary of Victory over ISIS commemorates the anniversary of the victory over the Islamic State. The Islamic State emerged from al Qaeda in Iraq and changed its name to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2013. The War between Iraq and its allies and the Islamic State started in December 2013, and in 2014, ISIS captured several cities in the northern territory of Iraq including the city of Mosul. ISIS once held 56,000 square kilometres of Iraqi territory at its height.

In the following years, with help from the United States and other countries, government troops gradually regained control of the ISIS-controlled territories. In December 2017, the government declared victory, however, ISIS fighters continued some violent and armed attacks. During the war, tens of thousands of people were killed or displaced, and some towns were totally destroyed.
