Angam Day (Nauru)

Angam Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Nauru on October 26 each year. Angam in the Nauruan language means celebration or to have reached a set goal. The holiday is the celebration day for the Nauruan people to reach 1500.

The Republic of Nauru is an island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. It is the third smallest country and the smallest island nation, with a population of about 10,000.

However, the Nauruan population reached a low level because of the influenza epidemic in 1902 and the introduction of labor for phosphate operations. After World War I, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom administrated Nauru as a League of Nations mandate. In 1919, the Australian Administrator Thomas Griffiths met with local chiefs and declared that the population of Nauruans should be no less than 1,500 to survive as a race.

As a result, the local chiefs decided the day would be Angam Day when the population reached 1500. Thirteen years after, the first Angam Baby was born on October 26, 1932.

However, the population reduced to less than 1300 during World War II when Japanese troops evacuated Nauruans to other islands for labor. The second Angam baby was born on March 31, 1949. However, the celebration day remained the same. The population has been growing steadily since then, and there are about 10,000 people in Nauru.
