Portugal Day is a public holiday in Portugal, observed on June 10 each year. The holiday commemorates the death of Luís de Camões on June 10, 1580. Camões wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry and drama, including his best know piece, "The Lusiads" (Os Lusíadas), and he was considered the greatest poet in Portugal.
The Lusiads is a Portuguese epic poem published in 1572, and it is widely regarded as the most important work of Portuguese literature.
