Unity Day (Zambia)

Unity Day is a public holiday in Zambia, and it is observed on the first Tuesday in July following Heroes' Day.

Zambia is composed of many different ethnic groups, and Unity Day honors the unity of the diverse ethnic groups who reside across the nation. In Zambia, there are over 70 ethnic groups. However, the nine main ethnolinguistic groups include about 90% of the population: the Nyanja-Chewa, Bemba, Tonga, Tumbuka, Lunda, Luvale, Kaonde, Nkoya, and Lozi.

In 1964, Zambia declared independence from the British, and Kenneth Kaunda served as the President of Zambia for 27 years from 1964 to 1991. Being a country with so many different ethnic groups, the normal relationship between different ethnolinguistic groups is one of the key factors to ensure the harmony and prosperity of the society. The official slogan of Zambian Unity Day, "One Zambia, One Nation", proclaimed by Kenneth Kaunda and his party, has helped Zambia grow into a stable and united nation in the last 50 years.
