United Nations Day

United Nations Day is a public holiday in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau, and it is observed on October 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the United Nations was formed in 1945.

United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization formed after World War II to prevent future wars and maintain international peace. The United Nations (UN) existed on October 24, 1945, although the preparation work started much earlier. There were 51 member states at its founding, and the number increased to 193 members, representing almost all the sovereign states in the world.

The United Nations (UN) has five branches: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat.

The secretary-general acts as the de facto leader of the United Nations (UN), and the General Assembly appoints it. Although there are no specific criteria, most secretaries-general took one or two terms with five years for each term in the past years.
