Territory Day (Wallis and Futuna)

Territory Day is a public holiday in Wallis and Futuna, observed on July 29 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when the islands became French territory in 1961.

Wallis and Futuna is a French island collectivity in the South Pacific, and people started to inhabit the islands about 3,000 years ago. The Dutch and the British were Europeans who first visited the islands but did not settle on them. In 1837, the French missionaries, including St. Pierre Chanel, arrived and started to settle there.

The islands became a French protectorate in 1888 and were administrated under the French colony of New Caledonia. Following a referendum in 1959, Wallis and Futuna became a separate French overseas territory on July 29, 1961. The islands became a French overseas collectivity in 2003.
