Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day commemorates the two most important events in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia): the student demonstrations on November 17, 1939, and the student demonstrations on November 1989.
The Nazis executed nine Czechoslovakia students and professors on November 17, 1939, after student demonstrations, and in 1941, November 17 was proclaimed International Students' Day.
On November 17, 1989, a student demonstration to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1939 demonstration. However, they were suppressed by the police when they arrived at National Avenue, and the demonstration sparked the Velvet Revolution.
