Sint Maarten's Day

Sint Maarten's Day is a public holiday in Sint Maarten, and it is observed on November 11 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493.

Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean. Indigenous people inhabited the island for centuries before Christopher Columbus arrived on November 11, 1493, during his second voyage, the feast day of Saint Martin.

The Spanish captured the island in 1633 but abandoned it in 1648 due to the lack of economic and strategic value.

The Dutch and the French partitioned the island in 1648 and established settlements after the Spanish left. The border changed many times until 1815 when the French took 61% of the island while the Dutch took 39%.

The Dutch portion became part of the Colony of Curaçao and Dependencies in 1815 and the Netherlands Antilles in 1948. On October 10, 2010, Sint Maarten became an overseas country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
