Simón Bolívar's Birthday (Venezuela)

Simón Bolívar's Birthday is a public holiday in Venezuela, and it is observed on July 24 each year. The holiday commemorates the birthday of Simón Bolívar, Liberator of America.

Simón Bolívar was born into a wealthy family in Caracas on July 14, 1783. He studied in Spain and France when he was young and was introduced to the Enlightenment which motivated him to gain the independence of South America.

In 1808, Napoleon led the French Empire and invaded the homeland of Spain which created a power vacuum in Spanish colonies in America. Simón Bolívar took advantage and established the Second Republic of Venezuela in 1813, which collapsed in 1814.

In 1817, he declared the Third Republic of Venezuela to liberate the entirety of Venezuela. On June 24, 1821, after the decisive Battle of Carabobo, Venezuela achieved full independence from Spain and established the Republic of Gran Colombia. He served as the first President of Gran Colombia.

Following the victories, he ousted Spanish rulers from Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia from 1822 to 1824, and the country Bolivia was named after him. He died of tuberculosis on December 17, 1830, and he is a national icon in South American countries.
