Indigenous Resistance Day (Venezuela)

Indigenous Resistance Day is a public holiday in Venezuela, and it is observed on October 12 each year. The holiday commemorates the start of the indigenous struggles against European invasion.

Venezuela is a country located on the northern coast of South America. Indigenous people inhabited America for thousands of years before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1498 during his third voyage. Spain colonized Venezuela starting in 1522. They first focused on the northern coast and pushed farther inland in the mid-18th century. Venezuela achieved full independence from Spain on June 24, 1821, after years of struggles.

Like many other American countries, Venezuela first celebrated "Columbus Day" commemorating the date when Christopher Columbus first discovered the Americas. On October 12, 2002, President Hugo Chávez changed Columbus Day to the Indigenous Resistance Day recognizing the indigenous struggles against Europeans.
