Saint Ursula's Day (British Virgin Islands)

Saint Ursula's Day is a public holiday in the British Virgin Islands, and it is observed on October 21 each year. The holiday commemorates the Patron saint of the British Virgin Islands, Saint Ursula.

According to the legend, Saint Ursula was the daughter of Christian parents in Great Britain between 300 – 600AD. In about 383, she led a large number of young girls and Christian women to cross the North Sea and to join her future husband and Roman soldiers. However, the Huns who at that time were ravaging Europe and massacred all her companions. The Hun's leader shot Ursula with an arrow when she refused to marry him.

The British Virgin Islands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea, which consist of 4 main islands Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, and many small islands and cays. The islands were discovered by  Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage.

Christopher Columbus named the islands "Santa Úrsula y las Once Mil Vírgenes", which was shortened to "the Virgin Islands". Because October 21 is the Feast of Saint Ursula, people guessed that Columbus may have discovered the islands on October 21, 1493.
