Revolution Day is a public holiday in Yemen, observed on September 26 yearly. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of when the Yemen Arab Republic is established in 1962.
Yemen is a country in Western Asia, and it was divided between the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire in the 1800s. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen (or North Yemen) was established on October 30, 1918, an independent sovereign state with Yahya Muhammad Hamid ed-Din being the King. The kingdom had two more kings: Yahya's son, Ahmad bin Yahya and his grandson Muhammad al-Badr.
Various revolts and assassinations attempting to end the rule of monarchy took place since the beginning of the kingdom. On September 26, 1962, the commander of the royal guard Abdullah as-Sallal led Egyptian-trained military officers to depose King Muhammad al-Badr and successfully overthrew the monarchy.
Abdullah al-Sallal became the first President of the newly founded Yemen Arab Republic (YAR).
