Revolution Day (Syria)

Revolution Day is a public holiday in Syria, observed on May 8. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the 1963 Syrian coup, also known as the 8 March Revolution, when the Ba'ath Party successfully seized power.

The Syrian Arab Republic is a country in Western Asia. In 1516, the Ottoman Empire invaded Syria, and Syria was under Ottoman rule for 400 years. In 1920, the Kingdom of Syria was established, but the French troops soon occupied it.

Syria and France negotiated a treaty of independence in 1936, but the French later refused to ratify it. However, the French power over Syria became weak during World War II. In 1946, France evacuated their troops due to pressure from the British and Syrian nationalists.

Following the evacuation of the French troops, Syria became independent on April 17, 1946. However, post-independence politics was marked by upheaval with many military coups and coup attempts.

A coup was staged on March 8, 1963, known as the March 8, 1963 coup. The coup was originally planned for March 7 but was postponed to March 8 because the then-government discovered the plan. The Ba'ath Party led the coup and successfully seized power.
