Repentance Day (Papua New Guinea)

Repentance Day is a public holiday in Papua New Guinea, observed on August 26 yearly.

Papua New Guinea is a religious country, with most of the population being Christians. According to the 2011 census, over 95% of the population are Christians. Repentance Day was created following a group of churches' requests to have a day to pray together and ask the Lord to forgive the wrongs.

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill created the holiday on August 15, 2011, and served as the seventh Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea between 2011 and 2019. The holiday was announced two weeks after he came into power on August 2, 2011.

During the holiday, prayer ceremonies will be held in churches nationwide.
