Remembrance Day (Marshall Islands)

Remembrance Day is a public holiday in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, observed on March 1 yearly. The holiday honors the victims and survivors of the nuclear testing in the late 1940s and 50s.

The United States had 67 nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands from 1946 to 1958. At that time, the Marshall Islands were under the administration of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.

On March 1, 1954, the United States tested a dry-fuel thermonuclear hydrogen bomb device named Bravo in the northwestern corner of Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands. It is one of the most destructive nuclear tests, and it was reported the power of Bravo was about 1000 times more than the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in World War II.

The fallout from the detonation fell on the residents in the nearby atolls. Many islanders were poisoned by the radiation exposure, which caused many types of cancers and health issues.
