People's April Revolution Day (Kyrgyzstan)

People's April Revolution Day is a public holiday in Kyrgyzstan, officially the Kyrgyz Republic, and it is observed on April 7 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the People's April Revolution in 2010.

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous landlocked country in Central Asia and gained independence in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Not satisfied with the poor economic situation and the rise in utility rates, demonstrators stormed the government in the city of Talas on April 6, 2010. The movement quickly spread to the Capital of Bishkek, and a small group of demonstrators was arrested on April 7, which led to the gathering of more demonstrators.

On April 7, thousands of demonstrators gathered in front of the presidential office and stormed the parliament building. In the following days, President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was forced to resign from the presidency, and an interim government was established. Two thousand people died, and 100 thousand people were displaced during the revolution. The revolution ultimately led to the constitutional referendum in 2010 and a new parliamentary system in Kyrgyzstan.
