Our Lady of Victory (Melilla)

Virgin of the Victory is a regional holiday in the autonomous city of Melilla in Spain, and it is observed on September 8 each year.

Our Lady of Victory celebrates the patron saint of the city of Melilla, the Virgin Mary. It is a sculptural image of the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus in her arms. According to the chronicles, the image of the Virgin of Victoria was going to be sent to the Spanish colonies in America. However, a storm prevented the ship from leaving for the New World, and for this reason, the image remained in the city of Melilla around 1571.

The Virgin Mary was considered the patron saint of Melilla in 1631, and in 1998, she was granted the title of Perpetual Honorary Mayor of Melilla.

On March 14, 1995, the Statute of Autonomy was granted to both Ceuta and Melilla.
