National Heroes' Day is a public holiday celebrated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and it is observed on the last Monday in May each year. The holiday commemorates the territory's first Chief Minister, James Alexander George Smith.
James Alexander George Smith, also known as J. A. G. S. McCartney or "JAGS" McCartney, was a politician in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He was born on June 30, 1945, and became the first Chief Minister on August 31, 1976 at 31. He is one of the youngest democratically elected leaders in the world.
He was important in mobilizing young people in politics and adopting a new Constitution to safeguard Islanders' rights. On May 9, 1980, he died in a private plane crash near Vineland, New Jersey.
