National Heroes' Day (Jamaica)

National Heroes' Day is a public holiday in Jamaica, and it is observed on the third Monday of October.

National Heroes' Day commemorates seven heroes in Jamaican history who were dedicated to the advancement of Jamaica.

  • Alexander Bustamante (1884 – 1977): A Jamaican politician and labour leader, and  the first prime minister of Jamaica;
  • George William Gordon (1815 – 1865): A wealthy Jamaican businessman and politician and a leading critic of the colonial government;
  • Marcus Garvey (1887 – 1940): a Jamaican political activist and the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA);
  • Nanny of the Maroons (1686 – 1755): leader of the Jamaican Maroons, the only female national hero.
  • Norman Manley (1893 – 1969): An advocate of universal suffrage, the first Premier of Jamaica;
  • Paul Bogle (1820 – 1865): A Jamaican Baptist deacon and activist focusing on improving the conditions of the poor, the leader of the Morant Bay rebellion;
  • Samuel Sharpe (1801 – 23 May 1832): An enslaved Jamaican, the leader of the 1831–32 Baptist War slave rebellion.
