People celebrate National Day on June 6 for two reasons. On June 6, 1523, Gustav Vasa was elected as the king, which marked Sweden's final independence from the Kalmar Union. It was comprised of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway at that time. On June 6, 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution.
National Day has a long history in Sweden and was celebrated as Swedish Flag Day before 1983.
