National Day, also known as El Día de la Hispanidad or Hispanic Day, is a public holiday in Spain, and it is observed on October 12 each year.
The holiday commemorates the Spanish legacy to the world, especially Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Many Hispanic America celebrates it. In the United States, it is celebrated as Columbus Day.
In 1981, after the approval of the Spanish Constitution in 1978, the holiday became the National Day of Spain and Hispanic Day (Fiesta Nacional de España y Día de la Hispanidad), a day celebrating the Hispanic diversity, brotherhood, common heritage, and cultural ties between Hispanic countries. The holiday was changed to the National Day of Spain (El Día de la Fiesta Nacional de España) in 1987.
