National Day celebrates when Oman gained independence from Portugal's control in 1650. The day is celebrated on the birthday of Qaboos bin Said, the Sultan of Oman, from 1970 to 2020. He was born on November 18, 1940.
The Portuguese arrived in Oman and dominated the region around Muscat to protect the sea lanes for trade to India in the early 1500s. After many battles, Oman recaptured Muscat from the Portuguese in 1650.
