National Day (Myanmar)

National Day is a public holiday in Myanmar, and it is observed on the 10th day following the full moon of the month of Tazaungmon each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the students' strike against the British administration at Rangoon University (current University of Yangon) in 1920.

After over 60 years Anglo-Burmese Wars, the British Empire defeated the Burmese and made it a colony of Great Britain in the 19th century.

Rangoon University became the center of civil discontent. Many national heroes, including General Aung San, the father of the Nation of modern-day Myanmar, were alumni of the university. The first students strike against the British administration occurred in 1920, which was the first step towards independence. Two more nationwide strikes also began at the Rangoon University in 1936 and 1938.
