Independence Day (Myanmar)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Myanmar, observed on January 4 yearly. The holiday celebrates the anniversary when Myanmar achieved its independence in 1948.

After over 60 years Anglo-Burmese Wars, the British Empire defeated the Burmese, and Burma became a colony of Great Britain in the 19^th century.

In 1940, Aung San founded the Burma Independence Army in Japan and fought for the Japanese in World War II. However, they switched to the Allied side in 1945. After World War II, Aung San negotiated with other ethnic leaders and signed the Panglong Agreement, which guaranteed independence as a unified state. On January 4, 1948, Myanmar proclaimed independence as the Union of Burma.
