Mwalimu Nyerere Day is a public holiday in Tanzania on October 14 each year. The holiday commemorates Julius Nyerere's death on October 14, 1999. Julius Nyerere was a Tanzanian anti-colonial activist, politician, and founder of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) party.
He is the Father of the Nation, also known as Mwalimu, which means teacher in English. He was the Prime Minister of Tanganyika from 1961 to 1962, and then the President from 1963 to 1964. After Zanzibar merged with mainland Tanganyika on April 26, 1964, he served as the President of Tanzania from 1964 to 1985.
Nyerere remained active in international affairs after he stood down as President in 1985. On October 14, 1999, he died due to a major stroke.
