May Revolution is a public holiday in Argentina, celebrated on May 25 each year.
May Revolution took place from May 18 to 25, 1810 as a reaction to Spain's Peninsular War, which was the military conflict fought by Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal against the invading and occupying forces of France for control of the Iberian Peninsula from 1807 to 1814.
In 1808, the Napoleonic French deposed the King Ferdinand VII of Spain and granted the throne to Napoleon's brother, Joseph Bonaparte. French troops also gained control of Seville and Andalusia.
The news of the Spanish defeat spread to Argentina in May 1810, which led to an uproar in Buenos Aires and the establishment of the new government of the Primera Junta. The May Revolution was considered the start of the Argentine War of Independence, formally achieved on July 9, 1816.
