Labour Day is a public holiday in Jamaica, and it is observed on May 23 each year. The celebration day will move to the next Monday when it falls on weekends.
Labour Day commemorates the labour rebellion in 1938 led by Alexander Bustamante leading to Jamaican independence in 1962. Labour Day was first celebrated in Jamaica as Empire Day in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday because of her emancipation of slaves in Jamaica. In 1972, Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley changed the holiday to celebrate the importance of labour in the development of Jamaica in commemoration of the 1938 rebellion.
During the holiday, many individuals and communities will be involved as volunteers in enormous public and community improvement projects across the country.
