International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis (Azerbaijan)

International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis is a public holiday in Azerbaijan, and it is observed on December 31 each year.

International Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis commemorates the anniversary when Azerbaijani residents dismantled the border fence between Soviet Azerbaijan and Iran in then-Nakhichevan ASSR to reunite with Iranian Azerbaijanis in 1989.

After Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Heydar Aliyev, who later became the 3rd President of Azerbaijan in 1993, first promoted the idea of a national day of unity, and International Solidarity Day became a national holiday in 1992.
