How to Insert Caption for an Image or Table in Word

When you have many tables and images in the reports, you may need to insert captions to them to distinguish each other. Once you have added the caption, you can reference your object anywhere in the report by inserting a cross-reference.

Step 1: Select the image or the table, and click the "References" tab from the ribbon;

Step 2: Click "Insert Caption" from the "Captions" area;

Step 3: Type the name of the image (e.g., "Reference tab") in the "Caption" box;

Step 4: Select "Figure" from the "Label" box, and select "Below selected item" from the "Position" box;

We use an image in this example but you can also select a table or an equation.

Step 5: Click "OK" at the bottom.
