Indian Arrival Day (Trinidad and Tobago)

Indian Arrival Day is a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago, observed on May 30 yearly. The holiday commemorates the arrival of the first Indentured Labourers from India to Trinidad in May 1845.

After the slaves were emancipated in Trinidad and Tobago, many refused to work on the plantations and moved to the urban areas, which caused a shortage of agricultural labor. Indentured laborers became the new system to meet the labor requirements needed in sugarcane plantations, and the system lasted from 1845 to 1917.

In May 1945, the first group of Indians was brought to Trinidad by the ship Fatel Razack, and since then, over 147,000 Indians were brought to Trinidad to work in sugarcane plantations. The indentured laborers signed a contract for a period of 5 years, which was later extended to 10 years. They were meant to receive wages, but the wages were low.
