Independence Day (Tanzania)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Tanzania, observed on December 9 yearly.

Independence Day commemorates the anniversary when Tanganyika proclaimed independence from the United Kingdom on December 9, 1961, with Queen Elizabeth II as the state head. A year later, Tanzania adopted a new constitution and abolished the monarchy. Tanganyika became a republic within the Commonwealth, with the President as the head of the state. In 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged and named Tanzania.
