Independence Day (Seychelles)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Seychelles, and it is observed on June 29 each year. The holiday commemorates when Seychelles gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1976.

Seychelles is an archipelagic island country in the Indian Ocean, comprising 115 islands. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama first saw the islands in 1503. In 1609, one British trading fleet lost in a storm landed on the islands, but the British did not take action.

The French explored the Seychelles islands in 1742 and took possession in 1756. The French colonists started to settle down on the islands in 1770. Three British ships arrivedĀ at Mahe island in 1794 and took over Seychelles without effort. In 1903, Seychelles became a Crown colony of the United Kingdom. In the early days, the British used Seychelles as a useful place to exile prisoners.

The population of Seychelles was growing over the years, reaching about 24,000 by the end of World War I. After negotiating with the United Kingdom, on June 29, 1976, Seychelles became an independent republic within the Commonwealth.
