Constitution Day (Seychelles)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Seychelles, observed on June 18 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary of the referendum when the current constitution was approved in 1993.

Seychelles is an archipelagic island country in the Indian Ocean, comprising 115 islands. After negotiating with the Unitd Kingdom on June 29, 1976, Seychelles became an independent republic within the Commonwealth.

James Mancham became the country's first president, but he was deposed in a coup by Prime Minister France-Albert René, who became the second president on June 5, 1977. René's party became the only legal political party in the country from 1979 to 1993, which allowed him to win the elections from 1979 to 1989.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, President René announced a return to the multiparty system of government and a new democratic constitution. A referendum to approve the new constitution was called from June 15 to June 18, 1993, and 73.9% of voters approved the draft. Seychelles had the first multiparty presidential elections under the new constitution in July 1993.
