Independence Day (Poland)

Independence Day is a public holiday in Poland, observed on November 11 each year. The holiday commemorates the anniversary when Poland regained its independence from the partitions of the German, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian Empires in 1918. In the late 18th century, the Habsburg Monarchy, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Russian Empire conducted three partitions of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. Poland ceased to exist in the following 123 years due to the three partitions.

During the First World War, the practitioners stood against each other, and the power over Poland weakened, which allowed the country to reemerge.

On November 11, 1918, Józef Piłsudski proclaimed the independence of the Polish state after he was appointed Commander in Chief of the Polish military and was entrusted with creating a national government for the newly independent country.

In other countries, November 11 is celebrated as Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, or Veterans Day.
