Constitution Day (Poland)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Poland on May 3 each year. The holiday celebrates the declaration of the Constitution on May 3, 1791, which is considered one of the most important achievements in the history of Poland. Constitution Day was declared a holiday two days later and was first celebrated on May 3, 1792.

The Constitution redressed the political defects of the federative Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a bi-federation of Poland and Lithuania ruled by a common monarch in the early 17th century. It introduced political equality between townspeople and nobility and placed the peasants under the government's protection.

The Constitution is the first in Europe and the second modern written national constitution globally. The United States Constitution came into force in 1789 and is the first in the world.
