Constitution Day (Poland)

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Poland, and it is observed on May 3 each year.

Constitution Day celebrates the declaration of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, which is considered as one of the most important achievements in the history of Poland. The Constitution Day was declared a holiday two days later, and first celebrated on May 3, 1792.

The Constitution was designed to redress the political defects of the federative Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a bi-federation of Poland and Lithuania ruled by a common monarch in the early 17th century. The Constitution introduced the political equality between townspeople and nobility and placed the peasants under the protection of the government.

The Constitution is the first in Europe, and the second modern written national constitution in the world. The United States Constitution came into force in 1789 and it is the first one in the world.
